How to Remove Bird Droppings and Tree Sap From Car Paint Safely
15 September 2026
Bird droppings and tree sap are two of the most common causes of permanent paint damage, and both are more urgent to deal with than most people realise.
Why they're more damaging than they look
Bird droppings are acidic and can etch through clear coat within a day or two in hot weather, leaving a permanent mark even after the mess is cleaned off. Tree sap is sticky and, left long enough, can also bond to the clear coat and become difficult to remove without damaging the paint underneath.
How to remove bird droppings safely
- Soften it first. Soak a microfibre cloth in warm water and lay it over the dropping for a minute or two rather than scrubbing straight away.
- Wipe gently in one direction, not back and forth, to avoid grinding any hard particles into the paint.
- Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water.
- If it's already etched a mark into the clear coat, a light machine polish can often remove it, but deep etching may need professional paint correction.
How to remove tree sap safely
- Soften the sap with warm, soapy water first rather than trying to scrape it off dry.
- If it doesn't lift easily, a dedicated tar and sap remover product (available at most auto parts stores) works better and more safely than household solvents.
- Avoid using fingernails, razor blades, or abrasive scrubbers, since these can scratch the clear coat even if the sap comes off.
- Wash and wax the area afterward to reseal the paint.
What not to do
- Don't leave either one to dry in the sun, since heat accelerates the damage.
- Don't use household cleaning products like glass cleaner or nail polish remover, which can strip wax and damage the clear coat.
- Don't scrape at either with a hard object.
If the damage is already done
If bird droppings or sap have already left etching or a dull patch in the paint, a professional detail with paint correction can usually restore it, and a ceramic coating afterward makes future incidents much easier to clean off before they cause damage.
