How Often Should You Wash Your Car?

15 September 2026

Most cars benefit from a wash every 1 to 2 weeks, but the right frequency depends more on your environment than a fixed schedule.

General guidelines

  • Coastal areas: every 1 to 2 weeks, since salt air accelerates corrosion and leaves a residue on the paint.
  • Dusty or rural areas: every 1 to 2 weeks, since dust and dirt build up quickly and can scratch the paint if left to sit.
  • City driving with regular parking undercover: every 3 to 4 weeks is usually enough.
  • After driving through bird dropping heavy areas (near trees, parks): wash as soon as practical, since bird droppings are acidic and can etch the clear coat within days.

Why washing technique matters more than frequency

Washing a car incorrectly can do more damage than not washing it often enough. The main culprits are:

  • Using a sponge that's dropped on the ground: picks up grit that then scratches the paint on the next pass
  • Washing in direct sunlight: soap dries too fast and leaves spots
  • Automatic car washes with brushes: brushes pick up grit between cars and can leave fine scratches (called swirl marks) over time

The two bucket method

Using two buckets, one with soapy water and one with plain rinse water, means you rinse your wash mitt before reloading it with soap, rather than putting dirty grit straight back onto the paint. It's a small change that noticeably reduces swirl marks over time.

If you don't have time to do it yourself

A professional exterior wash usually takes less time than doing it properly at home, and uses the right technique and products for your paint. You can compare local car washes and request a quote on Spott if you'd rather leave it to someone else.
